PHIL KREVELD

Off The Track

recent works by Phil Kreveld

The work, “Off the Track”, is based on frequent weekly trips on Melbourne;’ inner city trams. At one level it is an opportunity to study the fold of an ear or how the throat fattens as a passenger puts his or her head down to read. But at quite another level there is food for the imagination. What joys, what tragedies are part of this or that person who along with me is momentarily part of the travelling ‘community’. Off the track’ suggested itself to me as a title when I reflected on how much of our life is determined by the accident of birth--of whether we’re ‘on track’ or not. Over a period well in excess of a year, I gathered sketches which formed the basis of the paintings and drawings. And just as the power of language is limited by the rules of grammar and vocabulary, my works are limited by the limitations of my technique --but not by the energy which drives me to record what I see daily--and which moves me to keep going.
