TEGAN COLLIVER
Tegan was born in Melbourne and quickly developed a love of creating art at school. By age 10 she wanted oil painting lessons with a private teacher but was advised to wait until she was 12 to comprehend the techniques involved with tonal realism. She learnt with various teachers on weeknights after school including Shirley Bourne, Maxwell Wilks and Margaret Cowling and continued tuition with them during her Bachelor of Fine Art at Victoria College, Prahran. A fascination began with the two ‘worlds’ of art societies and art colleges with their distinct ways of teaching which culminated in her final year work of interiors. These subjects of interiors and cityscapes recur presently in her work with a suggestion of what may happen or what has been and include images of Port Melbourne, various National Trust buildings and Tribeca (formally the old brewery in East Melbourne). The interior is often referred to as a reflection of self but Tegan also enjoys the challenge of portraiture, including self-portraits, always executed from life. She has a love for many diverse subjects like the delicacies of still life and exploring texture and colour, even using candlelight. Her fascination with light extends to paintings and watercolours of Port Melbourne by moonlight and landscapes of luminous and ethereal mist and cloud of atmosphere.
I place a strong emphasis on working from life. I paint the places I love to go, people I love to meet and still life motifs of personal significance or for their beauty alone. I enjoy versatility of subjects which I think is a typical Gemini trait I don’t stay with one subject for too long!
