APPLETON STREET STUDIOS

Objective of the Grant

The aim of The Sandra Bardas Studio Grant in memory of Sandra Bardas is to encourage and support new and emerging artists and to promote the importance of the professional studio environment to young artists.

Who was Sandra Bardas

Sandra was always an artist. Everything she did was with an artist’s eye. Her aesthetics permeated her clothing, her home, her children, and of course her practice. Sandra had exuberance for clear pure colour that was unique and deeply personal, and an ability to use it that was joyful, playful, and powerful. She particularly loved orange and turquoise. She could work coloured conte with finesse, with no mud or blur. Her draftsmanship with a pencil or charcoal was extraordinary, and her life drawing exemplary. She could always describe a moment or a vision with pencil in hand.

Sandra was also an excellent photographer and photoshop enthusiast, loving to photograph people, dramatic colour, cultural events and graffiti, and usually had her “good” camera handy.

You could not split Sandra from her art as she was constantly creating. Her time at the Appleton Street studio was good, solid empowering work, a constant in her life, as were ongoing painting classes and life drawing sessions.

Outside of her studio Sandra Bardas was married to David Bardas with six children and ten grandchildren. She sat on the boards of the Royal Children’s Hospital, Playbox and Malthouse theatres and the Centre of Contemporary Photography. In 2004 she was awarded the Order of Australia for more than thirty years of work with indigenous youth and education and through cultural and health organisations. Her philanthropic work and tireless activism reached far beyond her immediate community.

Sandra was inspirational to all that knew her, an accomplished artist, she was passionate about the nurturing of the creative young mind. On the 27th of December 2007, Sandra Bardas, co-founder of the Appleton Street Studios died, aged 66.
